The Scottish Style Awards 2015!

Screen Shot 2015-10-28 at 12.20.08The venue of The Scottish Style Awards was the impressive Kelvingrove!

This weekend, AJCPR went to the 10th annual Scottish Style awards, which has become one of the most glittering nights in Scotland’s events calendar. Saturday saw the gathering and shoulder rubbing of the cream of Scotland’s most stylish creatives, including actors, fashion designers, musicians, models and entrepreneurs.

In association with Moet Chandon (insert hangover emoji) and hosted by actrees Sophie Kennedy at Glasgow’s stunning Kelvingrove Gallery, the event is in its 10th year and has become a benchmark for rewarding creative excellence.

The night included a fashion show and the guys at Glasgow’s Rainbow Rooms were backstage working their magic on the models hair, ensuring they all looked fantastic strutting down the catwalk. Some of the evening’s big winners were musician Paolo Nutini who won Most Stylish Male, the model turned nutritionist, Rosemary Ferguson who won Most Stylish Female, Model and Actor Craig McGinlay for Breakthrough star and the Designer of the Year was John Ray for Dunhill. All richly deserved.

There was a LOT of champagne consumed and a lot of fun had by all. The night once again proved that when it comes to talent, Scotland punches above its weight and is a creative force to be reckoned with on an internationally level. A massive congratulations to all the winners! We cannot wait till next year!

As the ultimate event for hairdressing professionals, Salon International was never going to be a quiet affair. With hundreds of exhibitors, thousands of visitors and hair entrepreneurs and a year’s preparation and planning, it’s all over in a flash!

A sea of professional brands providing products and services for literally everything with a follicle, to try and buy, filled the exhibition hall. Visitors poured in to see the latest gadgets and deals on offer and the feedback from everyone was fantastic!

The crowds just kept pouring in all weekend!

There were seminars by industry heavyweights Toni & Guy and Sassoon, and the fantastic live hair show, Rush Live was put on by the big hearted bunch at Rush Hair again where thousands of pounds were raised in aid of Great Ormand Street Hospital. The weekend was also peppered with live on–stand presentations by industry experts, Wahl being a particular crowd pleaser thanks to some breakdancing, shirtless and ab-exposing ‘pensioners’.

The Rush Live show was fantastic!

We were mainly based in the press office, which was busy but fun and we were delighted to see a lot of familiar faces and some new ones!

Salon International 2015 was a triumph and we can’t wait until 2016! We hope to see you there!

Steal her style!

Australian model, Fernanda Ly stole the show at Paris Fashion week when she opened for Louis Vuitton as a worldwide exclusive. With Fernanda’s bold look a hit on the runway it’s clear that pastel trends are here to stay.

‘Pastel shades are here to stay. Fernanda’s playful look is a trend that we keep seeing season after season. It’s a great way for blondes to update their look.’

Bringing back the buzz

Model twins Giulia and Camila Venturini have been the talk of the fashion industry after walking for Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, Chloe, Gucci and Versace. The girls unique look has earned them their supermodel status and really made them stand out from the crowd.

‘We love that we’re seeing less feminine hair on the catwalk. It’s a style statement and Screen Shot 2015-10-08 at 14.34.52makes a refreshing change from seeing countless models with long hair on every catwalk. It’s certainly a bold look and not one that we would advise jumping into, why not start the transition by trying out a shorter pixie crop before taking the plunge. Ensure that you have the edges of the fringe extra short along with the edges of your hairline; you can soften this look by teaming it with beige or golden undertones. One thing to remember when going for a buzz cut is that requires more regular maintenance trims, if you’ve got thicker hair you’ll need to have it cut every 3 weeks to keep the shape. Choosing your products is key when working with a such short hair, We would recommend using a clay based product it will give the hair an on trend matte finish. Avoid shine-enhancing products as these can make the hair appear greasy. We’ve seen lots of celebrities try this look out recently; it works best on women with petite facial features like Charlize Thereon and Emma Watson.’

Gary Hooker & Michael Young, British Hairdresser of the Year Nominees

Screen Shot 2015-10-08 at 14.34.44It’s great to see models taking a risk, I loved when Charlize Theron shaved her hair off for her role in Mad Max so it’s great to see this look filtering down to the catwalk. Clients tend to shy away from shorter styles as they’re scared that it won’t suit them however I tend to disagree as with slight changes made to the cut, and the way it’s styled you can tailor make a short haircut to suit every individual. Whether that’s a crop or an on trend buzz cut like we’ve seen recently. If you’re feeling extra bold why not add a fashionable pastel twist for a stand out look.’

Glam squad ready

Screen Shot 2015-10-07 at 17.01.13

The usually very gorgeous Julianne Moore.

We are used to seeing celebrities looking at their best on the covers of glossy mags and the red carpet. We all now know that it takes a “glam squad” to get ready for their close ups but what is it like to be a member of one of these crack teams? AJC93 clients Jason Collier and Jamie Stevens are on the speed dial of many celebrities who will call with sometimes as little as twenty minutes notice.

Jason Collier has worked with big names such as Sienna Miller, Victoria Beckham and Damian Lewis. He loves the buzz of tending to his celebrity clients and helping them prepare for whatever the occasion. “First of all I always have a kit prepared and am ready to go. I have been called and asked to be at a last minute appointment on more occasions than I dare to remember and I learned quickly that I prefer to be organised. That means having a range of great multi-purpose styling products to hand and a range of easy mixable colours. I also have an overnight bag at the front door, as you never know when you might be called away.”

Jason visits the homes of his private clients as well as working with them in studios, on-set and in hotels, “It can be a little nerve wracking when you first meet a big name but I find they are keen to put you at ease so they get the very best results. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you will turn up and they will look like a cover girl. They are very much human and you are there to make them look their very best, which gives them the confidence to go on and do their job.”

He advises remaining professional but friendly with VIP clients in order to establish a relationship, “You are in their space, unlike a salon environment which is a hairdresser’s domain, so treat the area with deference and courtesy. Gauge the atmosphere. This is a skill that is innate and can’t be learned. If the client looks pensive, quiet or tense follow their lead. Never ask invasive, personal or gossipy questions, that is not the way to gain the client’s trust and respect, but do remain positive, upbeat and be pleasant to have around. Most clients are going on to do something quite stressful, be it a press interview, walk the red carpet, photoshoot so try to put them at ease, engage and entertain while they are with you.”
