Edinburgh International Fashion Festival

Screen Shot 2016-07-27 at 09.28.49On 21 – 24 July 2016 Edinburgh’s International Fashion Festival entered its fifth year. This year, the festival focussed on creating a shared platform for young designers and established industry professionals who discussed topics in relation to the current fashion world. On Thursday 21st July, Gianni Scumaci, a third generation hairdresser who trained at the prestigious Vidal Sassoon in London, opened the fashion festival with a talk and an exhibition. The AJC team went along to get to know Scumaci a bit better, find out about his creative process and what his inspirations were. During the talk, Scumaci showed some of his previous work on shoots and how he got models to portray a certain character. He also spoke about how he was captivated by hair from a young boy, however, later realised he was more fascinated by the people and his ability to connect and communicate with them on a deeper level which would effectively impact the decisions and direction on the style he would do to their hair.

 

The exhibition unveiled Scumaci’s latest work, a collaboration with the inspired movement ‘Sink The Pink’. Created by Glyn Fussell, Sink The Pink has changed the face of London Clubbing. During the talk, Scumaci spoke about how he decided to collaborate with Sink The Pink after an encounter with Fussell at a shoot. Scumaci further discussed how the movement and everyone involved had inspired him to create his latest work. Scumaci informed the audience of how getting to know the men involved with Sink The Pink on a deeper level was able to allow him to discover their inner characters, moreover, allowing him to bring these characters out in a visual way. Scumaci and Fussell introduced the subjects of the exhibition team to the audience by showing photos before the shoot took place. Fussell gave some information about each of the team; their character, interests and skills, then Scumaci went on to talk about how used the teams characters to develop the looks for his exhibition along with images of the looks.

 

The night finished with Scumaci having a chat with publisher of Creative Head, Catherine Hancock. The chat was about all things hair, including how Scumaci uses his feelings along with his techniques learned from Vidal Sassoon to create the perfect hairstyles for his customers.

 

The AJC team thoroughly enjoyed the exhibition and talk and thought Scumaci opened the Edinburgh International Fashion Festival perfectly, keeping his audience engaged and interested at all times. The team also loved hearing about Sink The Pink and how the movement has encouraged many people to feel good in their own skin and have a place to go where they feel comfortable. The movement is truly inspirational and Fussel should feel extremely proud of the creative club night he has created.

The Long Hair Guide for Men

Winston Churchill once said “war is mainly a catalogue of blunders” and the same could often be said of hairstyles.

For some men, growing their hair long is something that can draw looks of envy from their follicly challenged peers, for whom the option is but dream. Some men like to keep their hairstyle short throughout their lives as a mark of their own personal choice. Others like to take the plunge and grow a mane of lustrous locks. Many however, lack the know-how, patience and confidence to make the transition, which can be awkward and look less than well groomed. Perseverance is the name of this game, and good things come to those wait. The results can and will inevitably transform a guys overall look. This is how to do that transformation for the better.

Whether you’re the bank manager who has a flair for the bohemian indie look or a young buck student who wants long surfer hair to go with his ironic t-shirts and unrealistic career expectations, or perhaps you’re the guy who has hit a mid life crisis and has decided now is the time to adopt that pony tail he has always wanted. The ponytail that will act as the perfect accessory for that new ear piercing and convertible. Whatever, if that’s your jam go for it!

However, maintenance can be a put off, but it need not be. Long hair is some of the easiest hair to manage.

Transition is the big deterrent in this style change. Just like everyone liked Bruce Jenner and everyone likes Caitlyn Jenner, It’s the transition phase people bitch about, but keep focused on the finished result.

Just as much as the actual hair, patience and time are the qualities required. Many fall at the second or third hurdle and go through the awkward stage only to get a hair cut, rendering the whole process pointless. A good stylist can be your friend in the battle of growth trenches, and you’re going to need one.

The number one question asked on this subject is “how long will this take?” This is tricky to answer because everyone’s hair grows differently and at various speeds. However, based on statistics, hair grows roughly at the pace of ¼ inch every month. So, depending on how long you want to grow your hair, this can be a good indicator of timescale.

 

The process of growing out

One of the most common pitfalls guys make when growing out their hair is to just let it go. Don’t. You are not Elsa from Frozen.

This will just encourage split ends; add to the awkward look due to uneven hair and just look generally unkept. Not the goal.

Regular trims and texturizing will ensure that it grows with a healthy shine and you will be able to manage it more. This will also reduce any awkward phase moments as your hair grows. Another good tip is to start also taking some vitamin B7 to strengthen hair follicles.

As your hair grows, it will do so from every angle, you will feel like it starts resembling a burst mattress. Don’t panic. You need to give the roots the best opportunity to grow in an efficient and healthy way. Now is the time to start giving yourself hair treatments based on your hair type, ask your stylist which is best suitable to you.

The best method to maintain that sophisticated appearance is to focus on growing it out from the top first followed by the back and the sides. To start, try keeping the back and sides short, only slowly permitting them to fill in as the top of the head’s hair grows out.

Use the time it takes to grow out your hair to stock up on the products that you are going to need for your new look. You’re going to need finishing and texture sprays along with hair masks and serums. Clays and pomades have been a friend to your former shorthaired self but they are often too heavy for longer hair. Creams are going to be your new BFF’S.

On matters of long locks, if you don’t have your stylist on call 24/7 ask your girlfriend/mum/sister/female friends. They will more than likely have a treasure trove of knowledge of all their tried and tested good and bad products.

Styling long hair.

When your hair has arrived at its final destination point of length, now is a new frontier: how to style long hair. The first thing you need to do is get a strategy; book an appointment with a stylist. You need an expert to discus the framing of your face and the focus of accentuation your best features and drawing less attention from your less favourable ones. Think jawlines, face shape, ears and the layering and texture of your hair are all things that need to be taken into account here.

These decisions are what separates the fine line between your look being more cool and dapper to looking like you were an extra in the revenant.

Conclusion

In the battlefields of transitioning from short to long hair, you’re stylist is your comrade. They have got the expert strategy, they have the blue prints, they know the battle lines and have the arsenal of products, better still they knows the enemy (bad hair) and they know that through many set backs (awkward phases) if you persevere, you can conquer and be victorious in winning the battle of short to long hair. There’s always much to swoon over at the Oscars but one thing is for sure is that the hair is always immaculate! With jaw-dropping, instantly iconic hairstyles sporting on the red carpet this year, we go through our top hairstyles from this years Oscars.

Chrissy Teigen – The mama-to-be was glowing at last nights Oscars. Like many celebs, the model opted for neutral makeup but let her bronzer do the work…however it wasn’t her Marchesca gown or make up that had everyone talking – it was her hair! Taking the hair braid trend to new heights, Chrissy wore her locks in multiple plaits for the biggest red carpet event of the year.

Next up we have Brooklyn star; Saoirse Ronan and she reminded us that an undone, textured blowout could easily be pulled off on the red carpet. With a brushed out beautiful wave and backed away from her face, team with a smoky eye; this look was perfect for Saoirse. The metallic shimmer from her bold eye make up also matched the actress’ sequins dress.

Rooney Mara

Rooney Mara channeled her inner Star Wars fan girl with her triple bun and powerful make-up. The Best Supporting Actress nominee is the undisputed queen of sleek, and with a sculptural updo Rooney looked the part on the Oscars red carpet. Mara slicked her hair into a series of severe bun twisted parts, which upped the dramatic impact of the allover lustrous polish that was entirely her own. In 2016 woman can more than conduct their own affairs, choose whether to marry or not get married at all, they know how to take control of their lives and are encouraged to do so. Woman can ask for a pay rise, a promotion, decide when they want to become mothers and when to ask for a divorce.

But there is still a stigma about a woman asking a man to marry her as opposed to the traditional opposite. Many woman shudder at the thought of having to ask. However, ladies taking the reigns in a proposal of matrimony have their very own day, and today is that day!

2016 is a leap year and the 29th of February is officially recognised as the day when a woman can ask her beau to marry her.

This is the time when all the Muriel’s and Bridget Jones’s out there can take control of their own destiny and get the marriage ball rolling. Interestingly, it was another Bridget who got the ball rolling.

A nun named St Bridget in fifth century Ireland, complained that woman were tired of waiting for men to ask them, so St Patrick decided to help, decreeing that once every four years there was a day when they could.

Back in 1288, the Scots passed a law that allowed a woman to propose marriage to the man of their dreams in a Leap Year with the law also stating that any man who declined the proposal on this day would have to pay a fine. The fine to be paid if a man declined could range from a silk dress or a pair of gloves. Seems like a fair deal.

There was a rule implemented that all those women proposing must wear a red petticoat while doing so, to give her suitor a heads up about what she was about to ask, giving him enough time to either prepare his acceptance speech or head for the hills.

58th Grammy Awards

Hosted by LL Cool J, the 58th Grammy Awards got underway in Los Angeles last night and the AJC team were there as special personal guests off Beyonce, Jay Z and Blue Ivy.

Ok not really, but we were there in spirit. Here is the round up: Adele’s sound was mucked up, Taylor Swift made history, Lady Gaga got her Bowie on and Kendrick Lamar laid down the performance of the night. There was no sight of Kanye, who is was too busy angry tweeting.

Taylor Swift won album of the year for her 1989 offering. Swifts win was made even more special as she becomes the only woman in history to win Best Album twice! Her first win in 2010 made her the youngest artist to win the award. Just as well she had a new hairstyle to mark the occasion.

Lady Gaga stepped in very big shoes to pull of her energetic tribute to the late David Bowie, sporting some very Bowie-esq hair as she covered a melody of his hits.

Adele’s got up to sing ‘All I ask’ but a mic dropped on the piano strings and the result was a guitar like sound over her song that gave the illusion that her performance was off, which of-course it wasn’t, because she’s Adele for gods sake.

Why Bowie Mattered to the Hair Industry.

The dust has now settled since we found out about the surprise death of David Bowie, which left everyone reflecting on a career that spanned five decades. Bowie mattered to a lot of people but just how was he relevant specifically to the hairdressing world? (And no, not just because he was a founder of The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men. True story, see Youtube)

Hairdressing and fashion are two horns of the same goat and you need a goat. Bowie was the cultural goat so to speak that stormed in via the medium of music and became both literally and metaphorically, music to the ears of a generation of misfits, then and since.

In an industry always on the cusp of fashion that employs people of all sexualities, hairdressers are by their nature, a creative breed. Hairdressing is about transformations, evolving looks and trying new looks. It’s about making people feel a certain way to empower them to believe they can do anything. Whether they want to look good while they run a multinational corporation or do the school run.

Bowie didn’t faff about, it wasn’t a gentle introduction, he appeared in the mainstream like many artists on Top of The Pops, but in a way that hadn’t been done before.  He took the nations attention by the scruff of the neck. It was like an atomic bomb went off in popular culture, from day 1 with that Starman performance in 1972. The boy from Brixton blew up the way we think about image and androgynous boundaries forever.

What happened was the genesis of how we structure our views on the unusual and how we search for the substance beneath regardless of the aesthetic. Now we see someone different and think ‘They look interesting!’ instead of ‘who’s that weirdo? Different is now ‘cool’. ‘He’s a bit Bowie” is now a positive byword for an alternative look.

Bowie was an architect in a radical shift in public consciousness and making weird and alternative socially acceptable. A barrier that no longer exists was moved. There’s very little a musician can do now to shock us, to make us think outside the box in the way that he started to.

Whatever you remember him as, The thin white Duke, Ziggy Stardust, Alladin Zane or Starman, everyone’s been exposed to the shift he caused. He gave a 24ct gold master class in it being ok to stand out from the crowd.

To understand the difference he made to the cultural landscape that we are all now accustomed to its hard to look around now and see what it could’ve been, you have to look before Bowie.

We were not university educated in the numbers we are now. (We have four times higher the number of students now than in the 70’s) We were a blue color nation. We were a much more macho society and there was no such thing as metrosexual. Homosexuality had only just been decriminalized 5 years before he appeared on BBC1 with Starman and no one knew if he was a man or a woman, straight or gay, talented or a joke. His ambiguity left him impossible to pigeonhole. He got flack, a lot of flack, but history would prove that again pioneers take all the arrows. This was showcased perfectly in 2013 when the V&A did their sold out retrospective exhibition ‘David Bowie is’.

In the 70’s, people were not bombarded with music stations, or the internet like the way we are today in a Kardashian led world of celebrity via social media that’s fed almost intravenously into our psyche. It was way much more a case of quality over quantity, this left people wanting more. It could be another week at least before anyone would see him again on television. You had to buy his music, or listen intently to the radio in the hope that one of his songs were played, you had to dare I say it; buy a magazine (gasp!).

It is almost impossible today to think of any of the world’s key influencers of fashion and hairdressing who were not directly influenced by David Bowie. Everyone from Saint Laurent’s Hedi Slimane, Jean Paul Gautier, to Madonna to Lady Gaga to Noel Gallagher to Mark Ronson, Kate Moss to Kate Bush, every time they reference David Bowie, and of course all they influences over 50 years has trickled down to hairdressing.

There maybe musicians out there that have created better songs, there may still be musicians to come that will make better songs, but there is no other musician that can come and make an impact and move social barriers by radicalizing the way people think about appearances and sexuality. He made people feel something, he made them feel accepted. Teenagers who didn’t feel like they fitted in now had permission to be unique and different. Nearly every empowered misfit today stands on the shoulders of David Bowie, and with that empowerment today any misfit can confidently walk into any salon and ask for their hair to be cut and dyed in any weird way they feel like by a hairdresser who encourages and respects individuality. This is all done without the bat of an eye lid and makes salons a way more interesting place to visit and work. Now ground control to major tom, that’s progress.

After last season when Burberry included a load of lace in its Menswear collection, you would probably be forgiven for thinking Burberry has played its surprise trump card, but then a red sequins tracksuit top comes gliding down the runway and its wise to remember to expect the unexpected. They used zip up tracksuit tops as a layer in almost all their other looks. The look Nods to Ian Brown and Blur with a big dash of Bowie. At the risk of sounding like Meryl Streep in The devil Wears Prada, red and greens in an Autumn/Winter collection is hardly groundbreaking, but these are different. (They just are, ok!) Red is certainly not dead and a whole plethora of red hues were all over the collections. From fire engine to burgundy, it was sprinkled all over designers collections including Astrid Anderson and McQueen, who got its red on with it’s military- style jackets.

Spicifiaclly military green. Moschino done cardigans , there was floor length khaki-coloured from father and son designer duo Casely Hayford and other designers showcased bombers, trousers and polo shirts. Fashion has went back onto the trenches.

Velvet Galore

Velvet is a bit like marmite or a Nicholas Cage movie, you either love or hate it, there’s no in-between. Designers at LC:M, they loved it. Topman went ape with it, Tiger of Sweeden used it as did the classic brands like Chester Barrie, Dunhill and Thomas Pink. Maybe not for popping into Lidl’s.
